UPDATE: On 7/21/17 the City Manager and the City Council were invited to join the Long Beach COA on Tuesday July 25th so that the COA can present the Mobi-Mat and Mobi-Wing to the residents of Long Beach. We will advise the exact time and location when that information is available. We don't want to lose a single day of accessible beach access this season.

The Commanding Officer’s Association of Long Beach, NY is pleased to announce the donation of 50 feet of Mobimats and a Mobimat Wing, to ensure that our fellow residents have full access to our beautiful Ocean Beach Park. The Mats have been purchased from Deschamps Mat Systems Inc. of Cedar Grove, NJ. DMS agreed to personally deliver the Mats to Long Beach at no cost.
President Bill Dodge, who live-streams the Long Beach City Council meetings stated “We have witnessed the frustrated pleas from our fellow residents requesting full access to the beach from the City of Long Beach. The precious few days of summer are flying by and we wanted to make sure everyone could enjoy the beach.”
Vice President Stefan Chernaski contacted Sharon Crooker, NE Sales Manager of DMS Inc. He said “We couldn’t sit by and watch this any longer so we went straight to the source. These mats can be driven over daily with no issues. The U.S. Military drives tanks over them and lands helicopters on them. The manufacturer just recommends straight wheels crossing the mats, no turning.”
The COA purchased a 50 foot section of 5 foot wide mat and a section of 5 foot wide, 16.5 foot long “wing”. The mat is compatible with the City’s current mats and the “wing” provides an area off the main path of the mat that a person in a wheelchair can maneuver and family and friends can set up for the day.
President Dodge further stated “The mats are for everyone. Anyone that has ever pulled a wagon full of beach supplies across the soft sand will find these mats useful as well.”
The COA also learned that Deschamps offers an “Ad Mat Panel” where interested parties can sponsor a section of Mobimats and have a memorial or advertisement placed on the mat. The COA hopes that the City seeks to partner with the private sector and continue installing mats throughout the City.
President Dodge said “The minimum is just not enough in this instance. COA members are the original Long Beach Community Police Officers from the 90’s. We are entrenched members of this Community who care. It is the small and sincere gestures that build the public trust.”
The COA hopes that these efforts bring awareness to this issue and encourage others to get involved.
